  • Rediscovering Ancient Beads with Stephanie Sersich $240

    In this one-day class, we’ll make big and little beads of the ancients. In the tradition of the first flame-workers, the Greeks and Romans, we’ll sculpt tiny pendants and symbolic beads. In the afternoon, we’ll make two-part pendants, fusing a bead to another part, made off-mandrel. Stephanie will cover sculpting techniques, twisted cane, raking dots and lines, heat-control and a little bit of ancient bead history.

    This class is intended to introduce the student to the ancient art of Flameworking.  Flameworking is the manipulation of molten glass using a localized heat source, such as a torch. In this 2 hour class we will explore its modern incarnation using gas/oxy torches and graphite and steel tools to produce marbles and figurines.  Students will each have their own workstation, torch , tools, and all the supplies and glass provided for them. Topics covered include: Basic safety and equipment operation, fundamentals of hot glass manipulation, glass color usage and surface decoration, and more.
